Mathematics Awards given out last night

During last night's honors convocation a number of awards were given to our graduating senior mathematics majors.  This year's winner of the Albert E. Lampen Award in Mathematics is Martha Precup.  This award is given each year to the graduating senior in recognition of his or her outstanding achievement in the study of mathematics at Hope.  This year's winner of the senior mathematics education award is Bill Buckman. Allison Pautler and Ryan Sheets were winners of the Egbert Winter Education award.  (All these seniors are pictured above.)

This year's winners of the John H. Kleinheksel Awards in Mathematics were Zachary Mitchell, Terra Fox, Marc Becchetti, Eileen Sanderson, and Blair Williams (their pictures are shown below).  These awards are given each year to students taking sophomore level courses for their outstanding achievement in mathematics and promise for future success.  Congratulations go out to all these students for a job well done!

New members are inducted into Pi Mu Epsilon

Many students were recently invited to join the Michigan Delta chapter of Pi Mu Epsilon.  The purpose of this national mathematics society is to promote scholarly activity in mathematics among the students in academic institutions.  An induction ceremony was held Wednesday, April 16.  After the induction ceremony everyone enjoyed our tradition of eating pie.

This year's inductees are Lauren Steel, Jessica Clouse, Eileen Sanderson, Jill Immink, Jennifer Birkenholz, Ashley Gruenberg, Jonathan Moerdyk, Samantha Dunmire, Chelsea Miedema, Laura Shears, Joshua Warner, Anna Gagliardi, Jacquelyn Lewis, Carleen Dykstra, Branden Bacon, Laura Smallegan, Chris Hall, Aimin Walsh, James Daly, David Visser, Jeanne Oxendine, Kelsey Browne, Jeff Ambrose, Nicole Mulder, Steve Barbachyn, Dan Lithio, and Mark Panaggio.



Mathematics majors inducted into Phi Beta Kappa and Sigma Xi

On Tuesday, April 22, Sigma Xi awards were given to science and mathematics students that maintained a high GPA and did scientific research.  Mathematics majors that received these awards were Laura Schaedig, Mallory Chapman, Dan Emmendorfer, Allison Pautler, Nicole Mulder, Martha Precup, Tung Nguyen, David Visser, James Daly, Jennifer Rice and Brandon Bacon.

Phi Beta Kappa

On Sunday, April 20, Martha Precup was initiated into the Zeta of Michigan chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the nation's oldest scholastic honorary society.
