acidification of lakes in parts of the United
States is a problem of great concern. A survey of characteristics of 148 lakes in
the Midwestern and eastern United States
was carried out to study acidification.
One of the variables measured was acid-neutralizing capacity (ANC). This variable describes the capability of a
lake to neutralize acid; low values can lead to a loss of biological resources.
