Name: Orphans in Africa

 

Abstract: This data set looked at 142 children in Zambia, Africa ages 0-5 years that were infected or susceptible to HIV/AIDS.  Hope College worked with the Milk and Medicine Program in Zambia.  This program provided children who are HIV/AIDS positive with formula and medicine.  It should be noted that there is missing data.

  1. ID (1-142 children)
  2. Year of Birth (of child)
  3. Gender (0=Female, 1=Male)
  4. Current Age (of child in years)
  5. Date of Arrival (of child to orphanage)
  6. Year of Arrival (of child to orphanage)
  7. Age at Date of Arrival (of child in years)
  8. Weight on Arrival Growth Chart (kilograms for what the average child should weigh in Zambia)
  9. Weight on Arrival Difference (Weight at Arrival-Growth Chart)
  10. Weight on Arrival (kilograms)
  11. Current Weight (kilograms)
  12. Difference (Current Weight-Weight at Arrival)
  13. Current Weight Growth Chart (kilograms for what the average child should weigh in Zambia)
  14. Current Weight Difference (Growth Chart for Current Weight-Current Weight)
  15. Number of Visits (the child had by observer)
  16. Number of Possible Visits (the child had by observer)
  17. Visit Difference (Number of Possible Visits-Number of Visits)
  18. Percent Visits (Number of Possible Visits/Number of Visits)
  19. Percent Visits Recoded (1=.47 or below, 2=Above .47)
  20. Guardian Status (1=Unknown, 2=HIV+, 3=HIV-)
  21. Orphan Status (1=Single (mother deceased), 2=Double (mother and father deceased), 3=Vulnerable(ill child))
  22. Guardian Relationship (1=Mother, 2=Father, 3=Grandmother, 4=Grandfather, 5=Aunt)
  23. Age of Guardian (1=0-19 years, 2=20-39 years, 3=40+years)
