"A Brief Course in
Mathematical Statistics"
is now available for a one semester course!
(The cover painting "Toss Up" was done by Joel Schoon Tanis,
creator and producer of "Come On Over!")
Here are several files that will be helpful when using this text. Eventually they will all be available through Prentice-Hall.
The files Data, Data-R, Animated Figures, Maple Examples,
and Maple Examples in html are all zipped files. Move these files
into a folder named Tanis-Hogg on your c-drive and then use them.

Author, with Zaven Karian, of Probability and Statistics: Explorations with MAPLE, second edition, a Prentice-Hall, Inc. publication. For information about the supplementary MAPLE statistics procedures, e-mail your request to Zaven Karian. The data for the exercises in this manual are namedstat.txt and are available for your use in MAPLE format. The datain a MAPLE format are also available for Probability and Statistical Inference, 5th edition.

The Maple supplement of more than 130 procedures for Release 6 is available from Maple. Click here for the address.

The 1999 Joint Mathematics Meetings were held in San Antonio, Texas, January 13-16. I presented the paper,  "Using MAPLE V Release 5 To Find the p.d.f.'s of Sums of Random Variables,"on Thursday, January 14, at 10:35 AM in the "MAA Session on Teaching Statistics: Teaching the Reasoning and New Technological Tools." (Abstract #939-C1-521)
The 1998 Joint Statistical Meetings were held in Dallas, Texas, August 9-13. The paper I presented was "MAPLE Integrated Into the Instruction of Probability and Statistics,"on Thursday, August 13, at 8:35 AM in the session "COMPUTER ALGEBRA SYSTEMS IN A COURSE IN PROBABILITY AND STATISTICS." Here is an expanded form  of my paper.
The 5th International Conference on Teaching Statistics: ICOTS-5, met in Singapore, June 21-26, 1998. I presented my paper, "Using MAPLE for Instruction in Undergraduate Probability and Statistics,"on Friday, June 26. Here is a  version of my paper.
The MAPLE worksheets that were written for the Joint Mathematics Meetings in Baltimore, January, 1998, have been run using Release 5 of MAPLE V. A nice feature of Release 5 is that Maple Worksheets can be exported as html files. Click on the title of my paper in Baltimore "Use Maple to Simulate Observations of the First m Out of n Order Statistics"  to see the output.
Working with students, we have developed a computer package that can be used to simulate tessellations like those created by the Dutch graphics artist, M. C. Escher. For more information about Escher, visit http://www.WorldOfEscher.com/ . To visit another interesting Escher site, click here.
